The Next Generation Battery Swappable Electric Buses
Overview of Electric Buses

A conventional diesel bus consumes nearly 50,000 liters of diesel every year in average. It can produce 128 metric tons of carbon dioxide, so it is one of the killers responsible for resource consumption and air pollution. When the crude oil price is still below $70 per barrel, people do not care about how much oil is in stock and how serious the air pollution is; every time when the crude oil price is over $ 100 per barrel, people turns their focus on the environmental pollution and renewable energy. Currently, the atmospheric content of carbon dioxide is about 280 ppm. After the industrial revolution, it grew at an annual rate of 2 ppm, which exceeded 385 ppm at 2010. It is estimated that the carbon dioxide may exceed 550 ppm in 2030. In that case the ice sheet in Greenland may melt which would raise the sea level by 7 meters. Consequently, the large amount of methane may release from the iceless permafrost to emit into the atmosphere and the Earth's temperature may instantly increase by 10 degrees C or more.
According to the research results by Clean Air Action Network in Hongkong, 40% of the air pollution in the city comes from the conventional diesel buses. Aleees has mastered the cathode material which has the advantages of high-quality and long cycle lifespan to integrate the upstream and downstream industrial resources. Based on the characteristics of buses, e.g., the fixed location, fixed distance and fixed timing as well as the concept of C to C (Cradle to Cradle), Aleees forms an alliance with other industrial partners to promote the first business model of "low-floor electric buses and battery swapping system. From the design and manufacturing of bus chassis to the production and recycling of batteries, Aleees handles all the tasks in the process. With the complementary road networks, the metropolitan-area "low carbon transport network" can be constructed so as to educate the people to reduce the ratio of travel by car and transfer the transport population to the mass rapid transport and public transport vehicles. In this way, the carbon dioxide emission can be reduced to form a "zero waste and full recycle" socio-economic structure.

Eight Features of Aleees' Next Generation Battery Exchange-Type Electric Buses

  1. Its operating cost per kilometer is comparable to that of a diesel bus. The company continues to develop the long-lifespan Aleees Lithium Battery with a cycle life up to 6000 times so as to reduce the industry operating costs and allow the public to easily participate in carbon reduction activities.
  2. The bus is equipped with a dual power system so as to improve the reliability. There are four removable batteries working independently. At least one battery is still functioning, it can guarantee that the bus can still run and carry the passengers to the destination safely.
  3. Exclusive ZF-wheel motors are employed to improve performance by 50%, reduce the battery load, and the effectively utilize the scarce resources.
  4. Designed lifespan up to 12 years.
  5. It can reduce the exhaust emission and decrease the public health threats accordingly (due to the automobile exhaust emission, 537 thousand people die of air pollution each year in Asia. The carbon emission per capita in Taiwan is up to 11.25 tons, the highest in Asia).
  6. Each electric bus can reduce 1.28 million tons of CO2 emission per year which is equivalent to the reduction of the consumption of 50,000 liters of diesel (Note).
  7. The WABCO pneumatic suspension and ABS system manufactured in German are used to provide ride comfort and driving safety by brake protection so as to ensure public safety and ride comfort.
  8. With Aleees' innovative "Battery Swappable System", it takes only 6 - 10 minutes to complete the battery exchange operation and continue the driving in a timely manner. Like the conventional fueling process, this process is convenient and fast without waiting for the charging time of 6 - 8 hours for a typical electric bus, so it does not affect the operating hours.

12-meter Low-floor Battery Swappable Type Electric Bus

Aleees has constructed Taiwan's first battery exchange type electric bus. The body is 12 meters long. The power source is the lithium ferrous battery with the positive electrode made of the lithium ferrous phosphate manufactured by Aleees. Also, Aleees is in charge of the maintenance and recycling of the batteries as an assurance for the operation of electric buses; the body is designed with U-shaped steel beams with reinforced body structure which can improve the ride safety for passengers. The WABCO pneumatic suspension system manufactured in Germany can enhance passenger's comfort. The specially designed large-sized window facilitates the passengers with panoramic view of the beautiful scenery outside the window. With the battery exchange system, it takes only 6 - 10 minutes to complete the battery replacement process which can reduce the time waste coming from the purely battery charging model as well as the damage to the battery. In addition, it can reduce the impact on the power grid.

After two years of efforts, with the accumulated 100,000 hours of driving experience in 2011, Aleees' 12meter low-floor battery exchange type electric bus has passed the tests and was certified by the Automotive Research and Testing Center (ARTC) and Vehicle Safety Certification Center (VSCC) in December of 2011. The bus also complies with the most recent regulations such as wheelchair ramp plate load, wheelchair fixation area strength, and the guide dog area, so it can provide a more friendly means of transport for the disables in various aspect.

After Aleees' 12-meter low-floor battery exchange type electric buses are certified, the company successively launched a series of low-carbon road transport routes since February 2012 in several parts of Taiwan (Taoyuan, Chungli, Taipei, Kinmen, etc.) (for more details, please refer to the current running routes of the green energy service system).

8.3-meter Medium/Large Battery Exchange Type Electric Buses

Aleees develop Taiwan's first medium/large battery swappable type electric bus which was certified by the Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC) and Vehicle Safety Certification Centre (VSCC) on March 7 in 2013. The medium/large bus can travel a distance up to 120 - 150 kilometers. With a new generation of the battery exchange system, it takes only 6 - 10 minutes to complete the battery replacement. The electric bus is developed by Alees with its proprietary lithium ferrous phosphate positive electrode material, production and assembly, electronic battery control system and modular design. Combined with the intelligent battery charge/exchange station and the traffic control center, the company integrates with the domestic and international industrial chain to build electric buses with international competitiveness.

The medium/large electric bus has a smaller body which is ideal for moving through the community and narrow alleys. The vehicle does not exert engine noisy during running. The gearless variable speed motor can eliminate the shock and discomfort due to gearshift so that the ride quality is improved. The low-floor chassis design with flat and wide open interior space can increase the convenience for the elderly and the young with comfort.

Aleees is planning to launch more 8.3-meter medium-sized battery exchange type electric buses into the fleet after passing the coming certification in 2013 to more counties and cities in Taiwan to provide free shuttle services to provide more environmentally friendly and more comfortable, low-carbon transportation services.
